Publication: MEA recordings of human epileptic postoperative cortical tissue

Epilepsy is a neuronal disorder that affects approximately 1% of the population. The study of human epileptic tissue provides an important contribution in understanding new epileptogenic mechanisms. While interictal epileptic discharges as well as pharmacologically-induced ictal events can be studied with classical electrophysiological methods, only microelectrode arrays (MEAs) open up the opportunity to:

• Simultaneously stimulate and record field potentials and action potentials of multiple neurons from different areas of the tissue.

• Study the spatio-temporal patterns of spontaneous interictal and evoked seizure-like events.

• Understand the mechanisms underlying seizure onset and propagation.

The group of Natalie Rouach at the Collège de France, together with Gille Huberfeld at Paris Descartes University, describe the complete experiment, from resection of epileptic tissue over slice preparation to MEA recordings in a Jove publication.
